Sir Robert Ayton was one of the earliest Scottish poets to use standard English as a literary medium. Educated at the University of St. Andrews, in the county of Fife, Ayton came into favour at court for a Latin panegyric on the accession of James VI to the English throne. He was knighted in 1612
