AutoDescriptor is a bulk automatic tool to generate, manage, and clean up meta descriptions for your WordPress content.

While the importance of meta descriptions for direct search rankings is often debated, they still play a significant role in real-world scenarios:

• Search engine result snippets (SERP presentation)
• Accessibility and content summaries
• Technical SEO audits and quality checks
• Performance and SEO tools such as Google Lighthouse

For example, Google Lighthouse and PageSpeed Insights often flag pages without a meta description and may assign a lower SEO score to them.

AutoDescriptor focuses on providing solid defaults and safe tools where WordPress core intentionally stays minimal.

Why meta descriptions still matter

WordPress core does not:

• Generate meta descriptions automatically (per post)
• Bulk generate descriptions for multiple posts or drafts
• Provide bulk tools to manage/delete descriptions

As a result, many sites end up with:

* Descriptions copied blindly from excerpts

How AutoDescriptor works

When generating descriptions, the plugin:

1. Extracts readable text from saved content
2. Supports Block Editor output, Classic Editor, and HTML blocks
3. Falls back to excerpt or title if content is unsuitable
4. Creates a concise, readable summary within the configured length
5. Stores the result as an automatic description

Manual descriptions are never overwritten and always take priority.

Bulk tools

The bulk tools allow you to:

• Generate descriptions for existing content
• Skip posts/pages that already have manual descriptions
• Override description length for a single run
• Delete automatic descriptions
• Delete manual descriptions (with confirmation)
• Preview random samples directly in the progress log

All bulk actions run in small, safe batches using AJAX.

Uninstall

By default, uninstalling the plugin does not remove any data.

You can explicitly opt in to full data removal (options and meta descriptions) from the plugin settings.
This behavior prevents accidental data loss.
